Yelp Rebrand Concept

Brand Identity

During the spring of 2015 I was tasked to rebrand a company as part of a class assignment for the Academy of Art University. We had the freedom to pick any relevant brand. At that time I was starting to rely on the Yelp website and app on a daily basis. I felt that although a great resource the Yelp brand and experience had room for improvement.

When designing the new logo I was inspired by the Airbnb’s brand values that bring the Bélo marque to life. In this case I saw yelp as a community where your voice can be heard and shared.

For the design of both the website and app, I wanted the experience to be seamless and engaging. I noticed the current site had so much information it was overwhelming to look at. The key was to introduce the new vibrant color palette and captivating imagery.

Findings

When I published the finished work on Behance, the project caught a lot of attention. Everyone that saw it had an opinion and I believe it's because Yelp is part of so many people's daily lives. The project suddenly went from a couple views to 10K views in days. It was featured on several design blogs, and it even caught the eye of a couple Yelp employees. They reached out and we had a conversation on the brand and the web and app experience.

Two years later after I published my design concept, Yelp went through an entire website redesign. To my surprise, they implemented many of my ideas. Starting with the splash screen, using rich and inviting imagery. My suggestion on searching by category was also adopted and they even introduced a way to discover new and popular places in a simmilar visual treat that I had suggested.

In conclusion, I am beyond flattered to learn that Yelp, a company that has over 100 million users, redesigned their website taking into consideration the ideas of a design student.
